5-Day Design Sprint SAVR RECIPES
-
SAVR is a start-up company that wants to make it easier for people to follow along and cook as they learn new recipes at home. They have an active community that rates and reviews recipes from other users.
-
Savr has provided us with the user research needed to create a solution.
This project spanned over a 5-day period where we will “Map”, “Sketch”, “Decide”, “Prototype”, and “Test” our solution to the problem.
-
In this Design Sprint I have been brought in by Savr to help the design for the screens when the user is cooking a recipe. Working with the research that was given to me and creating a UI that addresses their issues.
-
OBJECTIVE
Create a User Experience that makes beginner cooks feel fulfilled when cooking a new recipe.
The Problem Space
Recently, Savr has seen some negative reviews about recipes that involve many steps, or more advanced techniques. Many people who were excited about a certain recipe end up disappointed with the outcome, because they didn’t feel the instructions were clear, or easy to execute. Problems of timing, order of steps, learning new techniques, and other feedback to preparing the meal would need to be addressed.
RESEARCH
Feedback from customers about the SAVR app to be used to help build the Persona used for our UI design
-
ANNA
“Sometimes I feel like steps are spung on me.. and that turns an enjoyable experience into a stressful one. I like to be as prepared as I possibly can before I start cooking things that I can’t undo”
-
LINDSEY
“I like to be ready for the next few steps. Sometimes I’ll be standing around waiting, and it’s not until later that I realize I could’ve saved 20 mins by starting on something else.”
-
SARA
“I know the basic definitions - like, what minced Garlic should look like. But a lot of times I see techniques that I am totally unclear on. I google image search or YouTube it, which kind of throws everything off - and, means needing to drop what I’m doing to use my phone.”
PERSONA
The Persona created by SAVR from customer feedback to help address significant issues with the app and highlight the needs in the UI design
NICK
29 YEARS OLD
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
FRUSTRATIONS
- Sometimes Nick is unsure that he’s “on the right track” halfway through preparing the meal.
- Nick isn’t always clear on “what’s next” and how he can prep a few steps ahead. This often leads to mistakes, or a lot of time wasted.
- If a dish doesn’t come out as expected, he doesn’t really know where he went wrong, and he feels disappointed in the meal, and that he didn’t really learn anything for next time.
- Nick gets stressed out trying to refer back to his phone every time a new technique or step is introduced.
BEHAVIOURS
- Nick cooks about three nights a week - usually for himself, but sometimes for him and his girlfriend.
- Most of the time, he enjoys cooking and trying new recipes. He thinks following a recipe is the best way to learn some of the most basic cooking techniques.
- Nick likes tweaking or improving certain recipes, but he doesn’t feel comfortable improvising until he has cooked it “by the book” once.
Follow a recipe easily and confidently, so his dish comes out as expected.
Nick wants trying new recipes to be enjoyable and challenging - not stressful and chaotic.
GOALS
DAY 1 - MAPPING
Utilizing the research to create a map to help visualize the steps of using the app to cook a meal.
DAY 2 - SKETCH
Taking elements of our Map and creating ideas for our layout using the “Crazy 8’s” method
DAY 3 - DECIDE
When working with a team, this would be the day to make key decisions on Elements and design to then create a working Prototype.
I decided to make the layout simple for the user to follow along with a recipe.
The UI would transition into a horizontal screen to maximize the layout and make the screen easier to read along.
Incorporating videos at key points to help the user know techniques if needed and visually show how their food should look at that point.
To address issues with timing we can add a timer element so the user understands the flow of the recipe.
Design Decisions
DAY 4 - PROTOTYPE
User Testing with Prototype to present UI solutions and solve UX issues.

DAY 5 - TEST
The team would then test the design on this day usually implemented into an app that has already been developed. I tested the prototype with my target users to make sure the design solved the issues.
“I liked the timer because sometimes the recipe can be confusing about the time they state”
“I like the pictures/videos with the ingredients, sometimes the recipes don’t seem to match”
